Thousands of Protesters March Through London as University Staff Strike. The UCU described the day’s events as “historic”. Thousands of protesters walked along the streets of central London on Wednesday in a protest over pensions, working conditions and pay for university staff. The University and College Union (UCU) said on Twitter that the demonstration was “Our biggest ever rally”. The rally began around 1:00 PM at Kings Cross, with former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and UCU general secretary Jo Grady addressing the crowd. Speaking offstage later, Mr Corbyn said: “We’re here supporting university, college and school teachers on the actions they’re taking to try and get decent wages and proper funding of our education system.” He added: “This is an amazing event of solidarity of so many people looking for a better, fairer society and I’m proud to be part of it”.
